Getting started is not as hard as you might think, no matter which discipline you want to participate in.
It is a popular myth that you need to be a Skaife or Lowndes and spend up big to get involved, this is not true at all.
But you can have a load of fun and meet some great people along the way.
In fact all you need to compete in some events is a;
1.Membership
2.Cams licence
3.Car
There are even junior classes for you to compete in, so there's no excuse for you not to have a go.
Remember the objective is to have fun and develop your driving skills at the same time.
You don't have to have the quickest car, the fastest time or be the best driver, but you are guaranteed to walk away with a smile on your face.
Here are some event descriptions and vehicle guidelines to help you get started.
EVENT TYPES
MOTORKHANA
This is held on different surfaces (usually dirt or grass) and involves driving around a flagged course in the quickest time you can, there are alot of the courses so they change each event.
The approx entry fee for each event is $15-$30, (not including transport or petrol for your car)
HILLCLIMB
This involves driving a set course (usually on ashphalt) in the quickest time possible.
SPRINT
This involves driving on a fixed circuit against the clock not other drivers for 3 laps as fast as you can, you may get up to 8 runs in a day.
The approx cost of entering these type of events is $100-$200, (not including transport and petrol for your car)
Getting your Licence
First you will need to join our club, this costs $48.00 per year at the Holden Sporting Car Club of Vistoria.
Then you will need to obtain a cams (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) licence before you can compete in any cams event.
You can do this by calling cams ph: (03) 9593 7777 and requesting the application be sent to you or by visiting cams.com.au and clicking on the licence section.
To compete in motokhana events you can get a 2NS (2 non speed) Licence, this does not entitle you to enter any sprint track event.
To compete in hillclimbs and sprints you will need a 2S (2 speed) licence, this entitles you to enter any club level event on a fixed circuit involving higher speeds.
The approx cost of these licences is $100.00.
VEHICLE GUIDELINES
MOTORKHANA
To compete in motorkhana's you will need to follow these guidelines.
1. No loose items inside the vehicle. (this includes the boot & battery).
2. Car has to be in fairly good condition, (ie: no oil leaks, loose wheels, major rust).
3. You can compete with a standard seat blet (3 point) provided it is good condition and not frayed.
4. Your car does not have to be registered.
HILLCLIMB & SPEED
There are a few things you will need to do to your car to make it trackworthy, these are fairly minor and will not be too hard to do.
These regulations are available in the cams manual you recieve when you obtain your cams licence.
section 6, page 6-7 has all the requirements listed in detail.
Alternately you can contact a club member and I am sure they will help you with any questions you may have.
You will need cotton clothing (jeans, long sleeve shirt) to compete in these events.
You will also have to use a helmet for these events and this will cost you around $100 to buy new.
We hope this answers a few of your questions and makes it a little easier to get started.
