Brocky's Big Day Out - 12/11/2006
Well, what a relatively disappointing turn out for this event! The weather I am sure had a good deal to do with it, with rain early, and always threatening throughout the day as well. We arrived first at around 7.30 and set up a most excellent display. We had a DVD running and plenty of pictures and brochures and info packs and enthusiasm for all to see. As usual there was a very eclectic group of cars on display, from showroom stock to race cars to highly modified road cars. There just seemed to be something missing! I am sure now that a certain Mr P. Brock was missed much more than expected. The day lacked that special something that has been present before, and Brock is that ingredient. There were no special guests or “stars” present. I did see John Harvey wandering around, although he seemed to have little to do with the event as such. I am sure we all agree that the Brock Foundation does a wonderful job, and we are happy to support them, however, I fear this event will whither and die if this year is howt continues to be. Prizes were given out to some that were well deserved, and some not so well deserved. There were a number of truly outstanding cars there. Three for me were: An XC Falcon (I know, I know!) which was of show standard inside and out. An LX Hatchback with an injected five litre, and to the same standard. And an FE Holden that looked like it was picked from the dealer yesterday. Both the XC and the LX picked up prizes, however, the car of show went to a Lincoln Continental Mk4. This was nothing more than a tidy car, a little rough around the edges, with hydraulic suspension and 22’ wire wheels in true Low-rider style. Nothing special at all. The people voted with their feet, as the place emptied very quickly after this announcement! The club prize went to a group of Brock Club members (surprise!!). The person who was MC for the day simply made a fool of himself. IF you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t talk!! Apparently Craig Bennett owns an LX two door Commodore sports car!! And everything looked “sensational”. No, the car of show didn’t!! It was a good idea to bring a few cars to the front and talk to the owners though, however if you are going to cut them off, and move onto something else, don’t bother. So all in all a disappointing day for us all, and not the truly great celebration of a hero that we thought it could, and should, To add a bit more to Glenn’s article, Peter S. had done a great job with the display area, and is to be congratulated for his enthusiasm and willingness to travel all over the place at odd hours of the morning to get club related displays and materials set up - and to keep sourcing fuel for the genie so that we could all continue to enjoy Metallica throughout the day! One new piece of promotional material we had is a one page pamphlet that promotes the club, and can be customized for specific events. These and the video were popular on the day, so hopefully more new members will result from the not so Big Day Out. Finally, Craig Bennett deserves a very special mention for getting four plugs in for the car club during his interview – despite which the MC still didn’t get it, and went on to refer to the club as “the Holden Club with that great line up of Commodores down the back…..”Hmmm that would be the HDT Owners Club…. Roll on the All Holden Day, and I can only hope that BBDO can improve on this years performance - it should have been the greatest.
